Check the number of ephermal ports in use

This article describes how to check the number of TCP ports (that is, ephermal ports) that are currently in use. This is useful for troubleshooting all ports in use. Useful article for Port Exhaustion.


All SAM versions


In the command prompt, run the command:


netstat -nao | find /i "estab" /c


The value returned is the number of ports currently being used. To increase the number of ports available for TCP processes, refer to the article Ephemeral Port Exhaustion.


If the number of ports seem high and there are a lot of 'Time_Wait' state instances in the nestat output check the following:

  • Check the amount of Applications with the status of 'Down' (only due to failed credentials, meaning not down to component critical) and 'Unknown' status. Clean up/delete and or fix applications (failed credentials) with the mention status indications
  • Check the amount of nodes being polled via WMI that are Unknown and fix or remove from Orion. Troubleshooting WMI connectivity
  • Check 'Manage Agents' page from the Orion webconsole to see what agents are unable to connect and fix or remove. Troubleshooting Agents
