AppInsight for IIS: Access is denied when configuring

Overview

This article provides brief information and steps to resolve the issue when access is denied when you choose not to use the built-in administrator account for IIS polling. This can occur if you create a new user and then add this user to the Administrator's group.

Environment

All SAM versions

Cause

If the group policy or the local policy has Administrator Approval Mode set to Enable, the polling will fail with an error. This is usually because the administrator account does not have enough permissions.

Resolution

  1. In your local security policy, navigate to Local Policies > Security Options > User Account Control: Run all administrators in Administrator Approval Mode.
Note: This should be set to Disabled to let administrators poll properly.
  2. Navigate to Local Policies > Security Options > User Account Control: Admin Approval Mode for the Built-in Administrator Account.
Note: This should be Disabled for the built-in administrator to poll properly.
