Overview

This article describes how to resolve an issue where high CPU and Memory utilization related to svchost.exe (RPC) is encountered.

To verify if the steps below are related to your issue, check if svchost.exe (RPC service) is consuming a large amount of memory as seen in Task Manager.

Environment

All versions of SAM

Cause

This issue occurs because of a large volume of devices monitored via WMI that fail to authenticate or respond. This is common in environments where workstations are monitored that are shutdown during non business hours.

Resolution

  • Use the Unmanage Scheduling Utility to unmanage devices that will routinely go offline :https://solarwinds-prod.mindtouch.us...d_Applications
  • Monitor the devices using SNMP instead of WMI. When changing the polling method from WMI to SNMP, some historical data will be lost for devices where the change was made.
