HTTPS Monitors against Apache fail with "The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occurred on a send"

Updated June 3rd, 2016

Overview

The Orion APM HTTPS monitor produces the following error:

The underlying connection was closed: An unexpected error occured on a send.

Environment

All versions of SAM

Cause

This issue occurs when using a version of Apache that has OpenSSL prior to version 0.9.8f. In version 0.9.8f, TLS extensions are supported, however, it is only available in Windows Server 2008 and not in Windows Server 2003.

Steps

  1.  Add the following registry key to the machine where Orion APM resides:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\SecurityProviders\SCHANNEL\Protocols\TLS 1.0\Client]
"enabled"=dword:00000000
Warning: Consult your System Administrator before performing this procedure.

  1. To add the registry key mentioned above, open Notepad, and then copy and paste the key.
  2. Save the file, and change the Save As Type from, Text Documents (*.txt) to, All files (*.*).
  3. Name this and save it with the .reg extension.
  4. Double-click the .reg file you created to add it to the registry.

Note: If prompted by a security warning, allow this key to run.

  5.  Reboot your machine.

If you experience issues while adding to the registry, like monitors starting to fail, it may be necessary to disable SSL on your system.
Disabling your SSL is shown in KB 5998.
