HTTP-based Monitors fail website authentication

Overview

This article describes the issue when despite being given the correct credentials, HTTP-based Monitors fail to authenticate websites and returns the following error:

The Remote Server returned an error : (401) Unauthorized

Environment

  • All versions of SAM
  • All versions of Windows

 

Cause 

The authentication type used by the website is unsupported by the HTTP-based Monitors.

At the time of this writing, HTTP-based Monitors support the following authentication types:

  • Basic
  • Digest
  • NTLM

 

The following authentication types are unsupported:

  • Kerberos
  • Negotiate

Resolution

Enable one of the supported authentication types on the website being monitored.
