Overview

This article outlines an error when manually configuring AppInsight for Exchange. This causes the Powershell website to fail due to the parent configuration files locking a section for the default web site/Powershell path from inherited configuration files.

When testing on the Exchange server to verify the functionality of getting to the PowerShell website, using a browser when attempting to connect to: https://<local host ip>/powershell, RETURNED; Configuration error.

Server Error in '/PowerShell' Application

Configuration error

Description: an error occurred during the processing of a configuration file required to service this request. Please review the specific error details below and modify your configuration file appropriately.

Parser Error Message: This confgiuration section cannot be used at this path. This happens when the site administrator has locked access to this section using <location allowOverride="false"> from an inherited configuration file.

Source file: C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\v14\ClientAccess\PowerShell\Web.config

Environment

  • SAM 6.2 and later
  • MS Windows 2008 r2
  • MS Exchange 2010

Cause

This is due to errors in the web.config file located at C:\Windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.\config\web.config.

There are other inherited properties from the ApplicationHost config file located at C:\Windows\System32\inetsrv\config\.

Resolution

  1. Modifying the confgi files within C:\Windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.\config\web.config to allow <location allowOverride="true">.
  2. Recycle the application pools within ISS manager.
  3. performed an IISreset (this step may not be needed but it was done in this instance).
