AppInsight for SQL: A database is mistakenly being reported as having 0 bytes free, triggering false alerts

Overview

AppInsight for SQL: A database is mistakenly being reported as having 0 bytes free, triggering false alerts.

Environment

All SAM versions

Cause

This can occur if your database file is located on a remote Network Attached Storage (NAS) or Windows File Server and is not local to the SQL server itself. AppInsight for SQL has been designed to take volume space into account when calculating the remaining space for databases configured to use auto-grow. Remote volumes will not work.

Resolution

As a workaround:

  • Remove the thresholds
  • Disable the alert
  • Alert upon white space remaining in the database.
