SFTP error: Invalid key exchange value

Updated March 22, 2019

In some cases, you will get the error "SSH Protocol Error: invalid key exchange value" when connecting to SFTP. This can happen if the SSH private key is missing or there is an SSH fingerprint generated, but without the private key configured.

  • Serv-U MFT version  15.x.x

  • Missing SSH Private key
  • SSH Fingerprint is generated without the SSH private key
  • SSH private key is generated in Serv-U using 2048 key length

1. Go to the Domain or Server level where you set the SSH private key (for SFTP).

2. Please make sure that the SSH Key Fingerprint is generated.

3. If there is a private key but no fingerprint, this could mean that setup was incorrect or has become corrupted, or the private key password is incorrect.

4. Generate a new private key and save.
