Detail

FIPS 140-2 is a set of tested encryption specifications set by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Enabling FIPS 140-2 mode limits Serv-U to encryption algorithms (ciphers) certified to be FIPS 140-2 compliant and ensures the highest level of security for encrypted connections.

To apply FIPS 140-2 mode to both SSL (FTPS and HTTPS) and SSH (SFTP), select the Enabled FIPS 140-2 mode box on the Encryption tab via Server Limits & Settings.

Not all client applications are able to connect to Serv-U using SSL or SSH when Serv-U is in FIPS 140-2 mode. This is because FIPS is restricted to specific ciphers and encryption methods which are not supported by all client applications. Tested applications include:

  • SmartFTP (FTPS/SFTP)
  • FileZilla - (FTPS only)
  • FTP Voyager (SFTP only)
  • Core FTP LE (SFTP only)
  • CuteFTP (unsupported)
  • WinSCP (unsupported)
  • WS FTP (unsupported)
  • Internet Explorer 8 (HTTPS)
  • Firefox 3.5 (HTTPS)
  • Safari (HTTPS)
  • Google Chrome (HTTPS)
  • Opera (HTTPS)
