Allow FTP clients to change their passwords

Updated April 17, 2017

This article explains how to allow FTP clients to change their passwords.

All Serv-U versions

Users can change their password via the Site PSWD command or the Web Client. Enable the Allow user to change password option before changing (or configuring) a password or passwords.

Enable password changes

This option can be enabled at the user, group, domain, or server level. For example, if the option is enabled at a user level, only the specified user account can change the password. If enabled at the domain level, all domain users can change their passwords.

  1. Go to the Limit and Settings tab.
  2. From the Limit Type menu, select Password.
  3. Click Add and then select Allow users to change password.
  4. Select the Allow users... option and then click Save.
  5. (Optional) Open the Advanced menu and define the time and day users can be permitted to change their password. For example, the setting can be defined to only allow password changes from Mondays through Fridays, between 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Change the password

Open FTP Voyager and then select Tools > Custom Commands > Change Password.

The Serv-U Web Client enables user account password changes. Select Change Password, and then enter the old and new password.

Other password parameters

You can customize password requirements in Serv-U 7.0 and later versions. The following parameters can be added and then configured to your needed setting:

  • Minimum password length
  • Automatically expire passwords (select how often passwords must be changed)
  • Require complex passwords (requires a password with at least one capital letter and one non-alphabetic character)

SITE PSWD syntax

The SITE PSWD command is used for changing the user's password through an FTP client program. The syntax is SITE PSWD "oldpassword" "newpassword". The FTP client does not allow users to change their password unless the account has sufficient privileges.

The passwords may alternatively be enclosed by quotes ("). This can be useful in cases where one of the passwords contain spaces.

The command line in the FTP client also lets you use this command using the Tool option.
