FTP data transfer options

Table of contents

Updated May 1,2017

Overview

This article provides information on the different data transfer mode options and steps to manually set a preferred mode for  FTP Voyager.

The following are ways to perform an FTP data transfer in Serv-U:

  •  American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII)
  • Binary

Any data transfer can be done using the Binary mode. The ASCII mode, however, has limitations.

By default, the FTP Voyager automatically determines what mode to use for data transfers (ASCII or Binary). In Auto-ASCII mode, the FTP Voyager uses file extensions to determine which files will be transferred.

Environment

All Serv-U versions

Steps

To view or edit the list of extensions that FTP Voyager associates within ASCII mode, click View > Options > Auto ASCII extensions.

FTP Voyager can be forced to use a certain mode in cases where the Auto-ASCII setting is enabled, but the FTP Voyager still uses the non-preferred method for transferring data. This change can be made globally or on a per-site basis.

To force the FTP Voyager to use a certain mode:

  1. Open FTP Voyager.
Note: If the Site Profile Manager does not display, click Connect.
  2. Select the site, and then click Advanced > File.
  3. Select an FTP transfer mode from the Transfer Mode from the drop-down menu, and then click OK.
