Bandwidth throttling or bandwidth limitations in Serv-U

Updated April 17, 2017

Overview

Serv-U can enforce bandwidth throttling on its FTP server, FTPS server, SFTP server and web server interfaces. This allows administrators to protect the quality of service guarantees by ensuring that file transfer traffic does not flood restricted networks.

Restrictions can be set on individual users, on a group, on a Serv-U domain, or on the entire Serv-U server. These limits act in unison, allowing bandwidth to be partitioned any way necessary, restricting a server while granting some groups a higher bandwidth, or capping all users to specific amounts of bandwidth. These are inherited, so that a per-user limit can be set at the server level which might be overridden for administrative user accounts at the user level, among others.

In the sections below, all limits related to bandwidth are contained in the Limit Type of "Data Transfer", which can be accessed from the Limits menu of user accounts, groups, domains (on the left part of the Management Console under Limits and Settings) or for the whole server (on the right part of the Management Console under Limits and Settings).

Detail

Set bandwidth limitations per user

Set bandwidth limitations for individual user accounts. Limits can be set for each user and does not affect other user accounts.

  1. Open the user menu and edit the user account which should be limited.
  2. Open the Limits and Settings, and then select Data Transfer from the Limit Type drop-down menu.
  3. To limit the download bandwidth, click Add and then select the Maximum download speed for user accounts option.
  4. To limit the upload bandwidth, click Add and then select the Maximum download speed for user accounts option.

Set bandwidth limitations per group

If the bandwidth limitations must be set per group, they can be set by editing the group and opening the Limits and Settings menu. Similarly, the Data Transfer limits are used. The Maximum upload speed for all group members and Maximum download speed for all group members options are used to limit the group as a whole. The user level bandwidth limitations can be set here and inherited by group members.

Set bandwidth limitations per domain

Serv-U domains, which is a collection of users and groups bound by common settings, can also be set to cap at specific levels of bandwidth usage. The Limits and Settings menu on the left part of the main Management Console page allows these limits to be set. The domain level of configuration adds the Maximum download speed for domain and Maximum upload speed for domain options, and also allows the user level settings to be configured and inherited by groups or users.

Set bandwidth limitations per server

Serv-U as a server can also be set to consume only a certain amount of bandwidth. This is a server-wide limit that cannot be overridden. The Limits and Settings menu on the right part of the main Management Console page allows these limits to be set. The server level of configuration lists the Maximum download speed for server and Maximum upload speed for server options, and also allows the user level settings to be configured and inherited by groups or users.
