Why can't I uninstall or upgrade x86 or x64 packages using the alternate package type?

Updated January 10, 2018

Overview

Can't uninstall x86 or x64 packages using the alternate package type due to applicability.

Environment

  • All Patch Manager packages

Details

Due to the applicability of the packages, you must uninstall packages using the installer type - meaning if you have an x86 package installed, you need to use an x86 package to uninstall or upgrade it. You cannot use an x64 package to uninstall or upgrade an x86 package and vise-versa.

computer_explorer-installed_software_tab.pngAs shown in this image to the right, .exe files have no Product ID and so there is no ability to use the uninstall option through Patch Manager to remove the package after installation.

Because of the lack of a Product ID for .exe installs, they must be removed manually, unless there is an uninstaller package created by the manufacturer of the application. However, these would not be executed through Patch Manager.
