WSUS issues after applying Microsoft KB3159706

Overview

Microsoft provided an update described in KB3159706. This update is for EDS encryption and restructures the WSUS database for Microsoft® Windows® 10 update distribution. Microsoft provided post-Installation instructions, which are required.

If the post-installation steps are not completed, you will experience issues when using WSUS. These include:

  • WSUS Console will not connect.
  • Errors seen in the Windows Application log or in the WSUS console directly:
    • Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE'. Reason: Failed to open the explicitly specified database 'SUSDB'.

Cause 

The Windows update restructures the SQL database.

Resolution

To resolve the issue, you can:

  • Revert back or remove the KB update.
  • Apply the update and follow the installation and post-installation provided by Microsoft in the KB.
