WSUS Downstream settings reside solely with the WSUS portion of the environment as the Downstream server only synchronizes with the Upstream server.  You may see errors delivered in the Patch Manager console that Patch Manager has many views that pull from the WSUS console directly.

All versions of Patch Manager

This error is caused by a communication issue with the Downstream server reaching the Upstream server during synchronization. This could be caused by a networking issue or improperly configured settings in the Downstream WSUS server.

Verify WSUS settings:

  • To verify WSUS settings review this Microsoft guide Set Up a Hierarchy of WSUS Servers.
  • Verify that hostname information is correct.
  • Verify the port is correct 80 (443 for SSL) is default for 2008 R2 servers and earlier.  8530 (8531 for SSL) is the default for WSUS on Server 2012 R2 and later.

Verify network connectivity to the Upstream server

  • Ports are open.
  • Hostname is resolvable.
