Unable to uninstall Internet Explorer using WSUS

Overview

When you install Microsoft® Internet Explorer® on a managed system using WSUS, you cannot use WSUS to uninstall the application from the system. 

Environment

  • All Patch Manager versions
  • All Microsoft Windows versions

Cause

WSUS can push new Internet Explorer versions and other Windows-based features to managed systems. When the installation is completed, they cannot be uninstalled using WSUS or Patch Manager Update Management. 

Workaround

Run a batch file to uninstall the update. 

For example: 

FORFILES /P %WINDIR%\servicing\Packages /M Microsoft-Windows-InternetExplorer-*11.*.mum /c "cmd /c echo Uninstalling package @fname && start /w pkgmgr /up:@fname /quiet /norestart"
