Unable to create self-signed certificates on Windows Server 2012 R2 for remote WSUS

Overview

Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) cannot create self-signed certificates for Patch Manager packages.

Environment

  • WSUS on Microsoft® Windows Server® 2012 R2
  • All Patch Manager versions

Cause

This behavior is by Microsoft design and only applies to Patch Manager servers running Windows Server 2012 R2 (as of Feb 2014).

Workaround

Perform one of the following procedures:
