Deploying Agents

Updated: October 9, 2017

Overview

This article describes how to deploy agents using the following procedures::

  • Deployed from the Patch Manager Console

  • Offline deployment using the Patch Manager Console

  • Distributed using WSUS

  • Manually installed on the client

Environment

  • All Patch Manager versions

Steps

Deploy from the Patch Manager Console

You can push the agent to the client computer from the Patch Manager Console. After the agent is installed on the client, the agent communicates back to the server to request a certificate. After you approve the certificate exchange, the agent is ready for use.

To push the agent:

  1. In the Patch Manager navigation pane, expand Enterprise and select Managed Computers.

  2. Select a computer in the center pane.

  3. In the Actions pane, click Deploy Client Components.

  4. In the Task Options Wizard, select Install or Repair Client Components, and click Next.
  5. Select the following, and then click Next:

    • Install WMI Providers. Patch Manager installs the correct providers on your managed computer.
    • Install the Patch Manager Agent. Patch Manager installs the client agent on your managed computer.
  6. Select Install using Remote install Service - Installs the components immediately, and click Next.

  7. Select the clients you want to deploy the components, and then click Next.

  8. Review your selections, and click Finish.

Offline Deployment

You can deploy agents to client computers that are not currently connected to the corporate network. This process provisions the agent with a certificate so you do not need to approve the agent.

To provision an agent offline:

  1. In the Patch Manager navigation pane, expand Enterprise and select Managed Computers.

  2. Select a computer from the center pane.

  3. In the Actions pane, click Provision Agent Offline.
  4. In the Agent Provisioning Wizard, ensure that the host information is correct, and click Next.

  5. Click Browse and select the location where you want to place the provisioning installer.

  6. Select Recreate existing certificate if you do not want to use the existing certificate.

  7. Enter the password used to protect the signed Patch Manager server certificate.

  8. Click Finish.

Distribute using WSUS

If you wish to distribute the agent to multiple computers at once, you can create an installer package and distribute it through WSUS as you normally would.

To create a WSUS installer package:

  1. In the Patch Manager navigation pane, expand Enterprise and select Managed Computers.

  2. Select a computer in the center pane.

  3. In the Actions pane, click Deploy Client Components.

  4. In the Task Options Wizard, select Install or Repair Client Components.

  5. Click Next.

  6. Select the following, and then click Next:

    • Install WMI Providers. Patch Manager installs the correct providers on your managed computer.
    • Install the Patch Manager Agent. Patch Manager installs the client agent on your managed computer.
  7. Select Create a WSUS Installer Package, and click Next.

  8. Select the clients you want to deploy the components, and click Next.

  9. Review your selections, and click Finish.

  10. Publish this package as you would any other package.

Manual Install

You can manually install the agent on the client computer using the WMI Providers installer. You must have your PAS information available to install the agent.

To create a WMI providers package:

  1. Run the WMI providers installer.

  2. Click Next.

  3. Accept the EULA, and click Next.

  4. Select Complete, and click Next.

  5. Change the installation folder (if required).

  6. Enter the PAS information.

  7. Select Request recreating Certificate, and click Next.

  8. Click Next again to complete the installation.
