Patch Manager uses inventory tasks to pull census data from the WSUS servers and managed systems. This data is converted into information that displays in the Patch Manager Admin Console, Orion Web Console (for Orion integrations), and reports. 

You can create two types of inventory tasks to populate your Patch Manager reports:

  • WSUS Inventory
  • Inventory

The WSUS Inventory task uses the WSUS API to query your upstream and downstream WSUS servers. This task provides detailed information about the WSUS server configuration, WSUS server statistics, basic computer inventory attributes, and so on. Data from the WSUS Inventory task populates the WSUS reports located at Administration and Reporting > Reporting > WSUS Reports.

The Inventory task provides status information about the information and processes on your managed systems. The data collected from this task populates the Configuration Management reports located at Administration and Reporting > Reporting > Configuration Management Reports.
