SQL Network Interface error when running DBHelper.exe

Overview

Database Helper (DBHelper.exe) is an open source application that assists with programming and interacting with a Microsoft® SQL Server® database. When you run Database Helper on your Patch Manager SQL Server database, the following error displays: 

SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance specified

Patch Manager 2.1

Cause 

  • Network issue
  • Incorrect server or name instance
  • Patch Manager server issue

Resolution

If this procedure does not resolve the issue, repair the Patch Manager installation on your Patch Manager server.

Repair the Patch Manager installation

  1. Verify the following:
    • Server/instance name
    • Port numbers being opened
    • SQL Browser service is running
  2. Temporarily disable any antivirus software.
  3. Download the Patch Manager full package (with SQL) for your installed version from the Customer Portal.
    1. Log in to the Customer Portal
    2. Click Downloads and select Download Product.
    3. Click the Products drop-down menu and select Patch Manager. 
    4. In the Patch Manager full package (with SQL) field, click the drop-down menu and select your Patch Manager version.
    5. Click Download and follow the prompts on your screen.
  4. Log in to the Patch Manager server as a local administrator, preferably using the Patch Manager service account (if you created this account). 
  5. Run the SolarWinds Patch Manager installer and complete the installation. The installer will prompt you to install any missing prerequisite software components.
  6. Run the DBHelper.exe command and check for errors.
  7. Re-enable any antivirus software.
