Patch Manager times out when generating a report for over 200 management servers

Overview

When you query over 200 management servers to generate a report, Patch Manager times out.

Environment

All Patch Manager versions

Cause

Querying over 200 management servers exceeds the architectural capacity of any distributed database environment, including the Patch Manager database. Additionally, many of these servers may be configured with bandwidth constraints and unreliable connections.

Resolution

Use the following methods to generate a Patch Manager report.

Generate a report for a single geographical site

Use the following method to run a report on a single downstream WSUS server by filtering the WSUS server name column in the report:

  1. Establish a Patch Manager Admin Console session to the site-specific Application server.
  2. Run the report from this server, filtering the WSUS server name column in the report.
This WSUS server contains the data for the local WSUS server.

Generate a report for your entire corporate enterprise

  1. Establish a Patch Manager Admin Console section to the local Application server.
  2. Filter the user preferences to establish a connection to the local management group.
This group should contain a full inventory of the upstream WSUS server.
  3. In the report, create a filter that includes a collection of WSUS servers (for example, all European offices).
