Patch Manager cannot retrieve the Update Server information


When you connect to a Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) server in the SolarWinds Patch Manager Admin Console, the following error message displays:

Failed to retrieve the Update Server Information

The access permissions on the WSUS server are incorrect. Please correct the IIS access permissions.

This issue can be caused by: 

  • Using a fully-qualified domain name (FQDN) for the connection name in Patch Manager
  • Entering incorrect WSUS server credentials in the credential ring


Solution 1: Verify the WSUS server credentials

  1. Log in to the SolarWinds Patch Manager Admin Console as an administrator.
  2. In the Patch Manager menu, expand Patch Manager System Configuration and select Security and User Management
  3. Click the Credential Ring tab in the center pane.
  4. Click the credential ring, and then select Credential Ring Wizard in the Actions pane.

    <Default> is the default credential ring. 

  5. Complete the wizard to confirm that the WSUS server is assigned to a WSUS administrator. 

Solution 2: Verify the fully qualified domain name (FQDN)

  1. Log in to the SolarWinds Patch Manager Admin Console as an administrator.
  2. In the navigation pane, expand Enterprise and select Update Services.
  3. Click Add or Configure WSUS Server in the Actions pane. 
  4. Click the Server Name drop-down menu, select the WSUS server, and then click Resolve.
  5. Verify that the Connection Name field value matches the Server Name field value.
    If required, edit the Connection Name field. 
  6. Click Test Connect to verify that the connection is successful. 
  7. Click Save. 

Solution 3: Run the Patch Manager Configuration Wizard

The following steps apply to Microsoft Windows Server 2012 and above.

  1. Access the Apps in your Windows Server operating system.
  2. Under SolarWinds, right-click Patch Manager Configuration Wizard and select Run as administrator.
  3. Click Next and complete the Patch Manager Configuration Wizard.
  4. Start the Patch Manager Console and connect to the WSUS server.
