Machines do not display in WSUS

This article describes how to troubleshoot an issue where the systems appear and disappear from the Microsoft® Windows Server® Update Services (WSUS) Console. This issue occurs when imaging machines with a WU policy duplicate the SUSID's on the Windows Update Agent.

An SUSID is the Windows Update Agent ID given to a node being updated by WSUS.

  • All Patch Managers versions
  • All WSUS versions

Imaging machines with a WU policy duplicate the SUSID's on the Windows Update Agent.

Verify that the machine is listed on Managed Computers in the Patch Manager navigation pane.

If the machine is not listed in Managed Computers, perform the following steps:

  1. In the Actions pane, click Windows Update Agent Maintenance and Repair.
  2. Select:
    • Reset Authorization
    • Reset SUS Client ID
  3. Click Next.
  4. Complete the remaining tasks in the Wizard.
  5. If the problem is resolved, you are finished.

If the problem is not resolved, go to step 6.

The proceeding instructions are recommended by Microsoft. See Automatic Updates Must Be Updated on the Microsoft TechNet website for details.

  6. On each server, browse to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate.
  7. Delete the values named PingID, SusClientID and SusClientValidation.
  8. Restart the Automatic Update service.
  9. Run the following command:
    wuauclt /resetauthorization /detectnow
