How to test third-party software packages before deployment

Before you approve and publish third party software packages with Patch Manager, query each managed computer to decide which computer requires the approved package.

You can perform this task using one of the following methods:

  • Detect Now and Report Now
  • Windows Update Scan View


Patch Manager all versions


Detect Now and Report Now

The Detect Now and Report Now tasks in Patch Manager forces specific clients to synchronize with the WSUS server. Detect Now executes an initial scan on the selected computers and reports the results to the WSUS server within thirty minutes. Report Now forces the selected computers to report their results immediately.

If you need the report immediately, execute Detect Now to start the query, and then execute Report Now within three to five minutes to receive the results.

Before you run the Report Now command, ensure that:

  • The Windows Update Agent running on the client is not busy.
  • The client computer has events to upload to the WSUS server. .

To schedule the Detect Now and Report Now tasks:

  1. Log in to Patch Manager as an administrator. 
  2. In the navigation pane, select a computer container.
  3. If applicable, select one or more computers in the center pane.
  4. In the Actions pane (right), click Detect Now.
  5. In the Task Options Wizard, select the computers to include in the request task, and click Next.

    For licensing information, see Patch Manager Licensing.

  6. In the Scheduling and Notification Options window, select the scheduling, export, and email options for the task, and then click Next.
  7. Review the information on the Summary dialog, and then click Finish.
    The system schedules the Detect Now task for the selected computers.
  8. Repeat step 2 through step 7 to schedule the Report Now task to occur three to five minutes later. 

Computer Explorer > Windows Update Scan

The Windows Update Scan tests your packages against a single computer and provides a real-time list of applicable updates, their installation status, and approval state for a single system. This scan produces faster results than the Detect Now and Report Now tasks because you do not have to schedule the scan or wait for the tasks to complete.

The Windows Update Scan only displays applicable updates.

To view real-time update information for a specific computer:

  1. Log in to Patch Manager as an administrator.
  2. In the navigation pane, select a computer container.
  3. Select a computer in the center pane.
  4. In the Actions pane, click Computer Explorer.
  5. In the Computer Explorer window, click the Windows Update Scan tab.
    The system displays the computer's update information in the data grid. For a new update, the Status column value should be Not installed. 
  6. Drag the scroll bar to the right to view the approval state for each update in the Approved column. .
