Error screen when Patch Manager deletes the catroot folder after running the Windows Update Agent Maintenance and Repair

Overview

This article describes the procedure to resolve the error screen when Patch Manager deletes the catroot folder after running the Windows Update Agent Maintenance and Repair and then selecting Delete the CatRoot and CatRoot2 directories.

Environment

​Patch Manager 2.1.0.1087

Cause 

The WMI Providers/Agents need updating.

Resolution

When you encounter the error screen, press F8 to access the Windows boot menu. Select Disable Driver Signature Enforcement to allow the operating system to load.

If the stop code (0x6B) displays, this solution may not allow the computer to boot properly. If it does not boot properly, go into System Recovery and implement the following:

  1. Start the client service and press F8 to access the Windows boot options.
  2. Select Disable Driver Signature Enforcement.
  3. In System Recovery mode navigate to Command Line  
  4. Navigate to D:\Windows\System32\ and backup catroot and catroot2 folders .
  5. Copy the following folders:

From: X:\Windows\System32\catroot

To: D:\Windows\System32\catroot

and

From: X:\Windows\System32\catroot2

To: D:\Windows\System32\catroot2

  1. Restart your machine.

 

To prevent the error screen, you need to update WMI Providers/Agents on all managed computers. Perform any of the following steps to update the client components:

  • Go to %Patch Manager Installation Folder%\Server\packages\EminentWare and save the wmiproviders_2.1.0.1394.exe file. Then you can force the installation of client components by running any task for managed compute.
  • After synchronization with the content server, download the SolarWinds WMI Providers 2.1.0.1394 package and publish it to the managed computers through the WSUS servers. For more information, refer to Publishing Software Packages
