WebinarUpcoming Webinar: Know What’s Changed – with NEW Server Configuration Monitor

Change management in IT is critical. But, even with a good change management process, changes are too often not correctly tracked, if at all. The configuration of your servers and applications is a key factor in their performance, availability, and security. Many incidents can be tracked back to an authorized (and sometimes unauthorized) configuration change, whether to a system file, configuration file, or Windows® Registry entry. Join SolarWinds VP of product management Brandon Shopp to discover how the new SolarWinds® Server Configuration Monitor is designed to help you.

Error displays after synchronizing the WSUS server

Last Updated: June 26, 2018

When you open the Patch Manager Administrator Console and synchronize the WSUS server, the following error displays in the Synchronization Details:

All Patch Manager versions

Communication issue with the downstream server reaching the upstream server during synchronization. This issue may be caused by a networking issue or improperly configured settings in the downstream WSUS server.

Verify the WSUS settings:

  1. Review Set up a hierarchy of WSUS servers
  2. Verify that the hostname information is correct.
  3. Verify that port 80 (443 for SSL) is the default port for servers running Windows Server 2008 R2 and earlier. Port 8530 (8531 for SSL) is the default for WSUS on Server 2012 R2 and later.
  4. Verify the network connection to the upstream server. Ensure that the ports are open and the hostname can be resolved by DNS.
