Patch Manager error displays when approving metadata-only packages for deployment

Updated September 18, 2018

Overview

When you try to approve metadata-only packages for deployment, Patch Manager fails and displays the following errors:

Failed to configure  approval state to Install for update"...

Cannot create and install deployment to an update that does not support install. The transaction ended in the trigger.

Environment

  • All Patch Manager versions

Cause

This is normal behavior for metadata-only packages. Metadata-only packages do not have content, which generates installation issues.

Resolution

  1. Download the package from the third-party website.
  2. Publish the third-party package using the package, not the metadata-only package.
See Publishing Custom Software Packages for more information.
