Installing an Automation Server role on a downstream WSUS server

Updated July 12, 2018

This article discusses whether you could install an Automation Server role on a downstream Patch Manager server hosting a WSUS server.

  • Patch manager
  • WSUS in Hierarchy mode

You can set up your Patch Manager deployment in a hierarchical configuration that includes upstream and downstream Patch Manager servers hosting a WSUS server. In this configuration, the downstream Patch Manager server receives updates directly from the upstream WSUS server. Any clients connecting to the downstream WSUS server receive these updates as well.

In this configuration, installing an Automation Server role on the downstream server is not required.
