The following error is received when you run a Wake On Lan task for a managed computer:


Failed to retrieve MAC address for target


All Patch Manager versions


Failure to retrieve MAC addresses during Wake On Lan tasks is caused by the incomplete network discovery task for that subnet.


  1. Expand Patch Manager System Configuration > Management Groups > Managed Enterprise.
  2. Click the Discover Subnets tab.
  3. In the Actions pane, click Add Subnet.
  4. Enter the IP Address of the workstation and choose the appropriate Subnet Mask.
    Note: The Starting Address and Ending Address will be populated automatically.
  5. Click Add Subnet and then click OK.
  6. Go to the Scheduled Tasks node and run the discovery.
    Note: The workstation must to be turned on during the discovery otherwise it will not work correctly.

The Wake on Lan and Shut Down tasks should now work after a completed discovery.
