ISSUE: Trying to upgrade SolarWinds Server to NPM 10.5, hits error: Invalid characters in the hostname of this server.

CAUSE: Hostname might have invalid character like an underscore; therefore, customer cannot restart and rename server.

ENVIRONMENT: All Orion modules

SOLUTION: There are 2 options to rename the server

Option 1

  1. Rename machine to <hostname>, restart machine
  2. Run Stand Alone Installer and update NPM.
  3. Finish installation
  4. When Configuration Wizard starts, close it immediately.
  5. Rename machine back to <hostname>, restart machine
  6. Run Configuration Wizard from start menu
  7. Finish configuration
Option 2:
  1. Ensure there is .NET 4 installed on the system, if not installed - install it
  2. Run NPM-Installer, when you see message with error, do not close it
  3. Navigate to "c:\Users\Administrator\AppData\Local\Temp\SWOrionSetup\" where "Administrator" is current user name, e.g. "John" or "Melinda"
  4. Run OrionInstaller.exe manually
  5. Finish installation
  6. Finish configuration
  7. Close the error you saw in step 2).
