SolarWinds Orion module engine stopping on Windows Server 2003 R2

Overview

SolarWinds Services stop with an error similar to the following:

ERROR SolarWinds.BusinessLayerHost.PluginManager - Unhandled exception caught by business layer host.
System.Reflection.TargetInvocationException: Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation. ---> System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not find file 'C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\sk7bbk7x.dll'.
File name: 'C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\sk7bbk7x.dll'

Environment

  • All Orion Core versions
  • Windows Server 2003 R2

Cause

The root cause of this error is related to caching in .NET version 4, as implemented in Windows Server 2003 R2.

Resolution

Microsoft has addressed this known issue. Refer to the Microsoft article Out of Memory' error message appears when you have a large number of programs running.

Note: Though the solution provided in the Microsoft article will address the issue, running the Configuration Wizard at any time will revert the fix, requiring the re-application of the provided fix.
