SolarWinds Orion Agent 1.6 Hotfix 2

Fixed issues

This hotfix addresses the following issues:

  • Agents installed on Linux-based computers return the distribution of the package installed instead of the operating system.
  • If the Orion Agent provisioning certificate is corrupt or not signed by the Orion certificate, it is not regenerated when Orion Modules are started.
  • The SHA-1 algorithm is deprecated in January 2017.
  • Deleting an agent from Ubuntu through the Orion Web Console does not remove the agent from the computer.
  • Port-exhaustion due to a resource leak occurs when running agents in server-initiated communication mode.
  • Restarting agents installed on Linux-based computers takes longer than expected and sends messages to the Discovery plugin.
  • Agents installed on Linux-based computers stop running after approximately 49 days.
  • Cannot upgrade passive agents' certificates.


SolarWinds Orion products running Orion Platform 2016.2. These products include:

  • NPM 12.0.1
  • SAM 6.3
  • NCM 7.5.1
  • NTA 4.2.1


  • While the Orion Agent provisioning certificate uses the SHA-3 signature, agent certificates using SHA-1 are not upgraded to SHA-3.
  • Install this hotfix on your main Orion server and any Additional Polling Engines.

Installation instructions

SolarWinds strongly recommends that you only edit the ROOTS file as instructed. Any additional modifications to the ROOTS file may result in system performance issues or may create an error state. 

  1. Stop all Orion services.
  2. Copy the Orion.AgentManagement. file to <ORION_FOLDER>/Packaging/Repository.
  3. Unblock files using the following procedure:
    1. In File Explorer, right-click on the file.
    2. Select Properties from the pop-up menu.
    3. From the General tab, click the 'Unblock' button and confirm the selection.
  4. Backup the <ORION_FOLDER>/Packaging/Roots/OrionCore.Packaging.roots file.
  5. Edit the <ORION_FOLDER>/Packaging/Roots/OrionCore.Packaging.roots file and update the following line:
          "<requires id="Orion.AgentManagement" version="[,]" />" 
          "<requires id="Orion.AgentManagement" version="[,]" />"
       Note: If you have Orion Agent hotfix 1, the original version number may be different.
  6. Run the Configuration Wizard.

Orion agents will receive updates when they connect to the Orion server, and the issues addressed in this hotfix no longer occur once the agent is updated.

Uninstallation instructions

  1. Stop all Orion services.
  2. Remove the Orion.AgentManagement. file to <ORION_FOLDER>/Packaging/Repository.
  3. Restore the <ORION_FOLDER>/Packaging/Roots/OrionCore.Packaging.roots file from your backup.
  4. Run the Configuration Wizard.
