SolarWinds Orion 2016.1 feature: More powerful and easier-to-use discovery

As part of the new discovery, you can add an Active Directory (AD) Controller and then select the Organizational Units (OUs) you want to scan. Using AD for discovery is particularly useful for adding large subnets because Orion can use the devices specified in AD instead of scanning every IP address.

You can also configure the system to automatically import discovered devices based on the settings you define. This means you don't have to go through the discovery import wizard after each discovery. Anything new will be monitored automatically.

Add nodes using Active Directory

In the Discovery Wizard, there is now an option to add servers and workstations to Orion by querying your Active Directory Domain controller.

Adding nodes from AD is significantly faster and more efficient than scanning every IP address in the subnet. In addition, for scheduled discoveries, Orion automatically imports new servers or workstations that are added to AD.

SolarWinds recommends adding nodes using AD for subnets larger than /23 CIDR.

When you are adding or modifying a discovery job, you'll see the Active Directory option on the Network panel. Click Add.


After you enter the domain controller's IP address or host name and credentials, use the Organizational Units page to select the OUs you want to scan for nodes. By default, all OUs are selected, and only servers will be added. If you also want to add workstations, clear the Import Servers Only check box.


On the Network Selection page, you can see the OUs added. You can add additional AD controllers, or any other IP addresses that you need before continuing with discovery.


Automatically import discovered devices

You can use the new Automatic Monitoring feature to automatically import discovered devices.

Using automatic monitoring means you don’t have to manually review the results of scheduled discoveries. It's most useful when you've configured your discovery to find similar nodes - for example, mostly servers, or mostly network devices.

When you are adding or modifying a discovery job, you'll see a new wizard panel called Monitoring Settings. This is where you can configure Orion to automatically monitor new devices found during a discovery job. You can also choose to add new devices manually.


Click Define Monitoring Settings to select the interface, volume, and application properties you want to apply to discovered nodes. Continue with configuring the discovery job as usual.

When the system next runs a discovery job, the monitoring settings will be applied to any discovered devices, and any matches are automatically imported and monitored in Orion.


Easier-to-use discovery

You'll notice a few things are different in the Network Sonard Wizard. We've added an introductory page that explains what discovery is, and re-organized the steps of the wizard into a more logical workflow. For example, you are now prompted to specify the devices you want to discover before you specify their credentials.
