Run SolarWinds Orion Application Pool under ApplicationPoolIdentity

Updated October 4, 2018

Overview

How to install and configure SolarWinds Orion Application Pool under ApplicationPoolIdentity instead of under NetworkService.

Environment

  • Orion Platform 2018.2 and higher

Cause

n/a

Resolution

  1. Create a new user account. This example uses the account name 'Pool'.
  2. Grant the 'Pool' user read access to C:\inetpub/SolarWinds.
  3. Ensure the 'Pool' user has read access to the following areas, which they should by default:
    1. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\SolarWinds\
    2. Temporary ASP.NET Files – something like ‘C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Temporary ASP.NET Files’
    3. Orion install folder. By default ‘C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\’
  4. Open the Certificates MMC for the Local System and grant the ‘Pool’ user read-only access to the ‘SolarWinds-Orion’ private key.

  5. Grant the ‘Pool’ user read/write/create/modify permission to the ‘C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds’ directory.
  6. Open the IIS Manager, right click on the ‘SolarWinds Orion Application Pool’ and select ‘Advanced Settings’.
  7. Change the ‘identity’ value from ‘Network Service’ to the ‘Pool’ user created in step #1.

  8. Recycle the AppPool or restart IIS using the ‘issreset’ command at the command line.
