Orion Web Console charts display Data is not available

Updated: May 9, 2017

Charts in the Orion Web Console display the following message:

Data is not available.

  • All Orion Platform products

This list provides the most common causes of the "No Data is available" message:

  • SQL server date \ time was set incorrectly. This meant the database created new tables in the future and the data would not be inserted.
  • The sample interval of the chart is shorter than the polling frequency
  • Historical data has already been summarized according to the retention settings of the SolarWinds Orion Database.
  • Customized Chart Settings

If the data are present in the database and reports, but not on charts, the following customized chart settings might exclude some data from the series on the chart:

    • Maximum Number of Data Series Displayed On Chart The number is series is set too low, for example it has been reduced from 10 to 2.
    • Chart Aspect RatioValue .3 for Web-ChartAspectRatio is too small for Min/Max/Avg charts

    Defaults are as follows:

To verify that the Maximum Number of Data Series Displayed on Chart is too low:

    1. Open the Database Manager, add the database, and run the following query:
Select * from Settings where SettingID like '%Web-MaximalNumberOfSeriesInChart%'
    2. If the query results are similar to the following table, the default settings have been changed.

Maximal Number Of Series In Chart

    3. Restore the default settings.
  • Meraki wireless controllers (NPM 12.1 and later): the Average Response Time and Packet Loss resources do not show data because these metrics are not supported for Meraki infrastructure. For Meraki, these metrics are polled from the cloud and thus might be misleading.
  • AIX nodes do not support Disk Queue Length and Disk Usage (response time).

SQL server date \ time was set incorrectly

Fixed issue by correcting the NTP server that was setting the date wrong and had to restore the database to before the issue occurs.

Sample interval shorter than polling frequency

Verify that the sample interval on the chart is longer than the polling frequency for the data the chart should display.

  1. In Main Settings & Administration, find the Thresholds & Polling grouping, and click Polling Settings.

  2. Review the interval for polling the statistics.

  3. Click Edit in the chart, adjust the Sample Interval on the chart so that it is not shorter than the polling interval.

For example, if polling Nodes every 10 minutes do not set Sample Interval to 10 Minutes, instead use a higher interval.

  4. Click Submit.

The chart should display correct data.

Historical data already summarized

By default, detailed statistics are stored in the database for 7 days.

After that, statistics collected within an hour are summarized, an average is calculated for each hour and stored in the database.

Consider changing how long you want to keep detailed historical data in the database.

Changing default settings can require additional space in the SolarWinds Orion database. Consider your SQL environment resources, such as disk space and hardware configuration before you change the retention periods.

Data not polled

  • If you added the device within the last few minutes, wait 10 minutes so that Orion can complete the polling cycle, and refresh your screen.
  • Verify that the device was not in maintenance (unmanaged state) during the requested time period. Click Settings > Manage Nodes, and check out the Status for the device. See Suspend collecting data for nodes.
  • Verify that interfaces or volumes are monitored correctly. In Node Management, select the node, and click List resources and make sure the interfaces or volumes are selected.
  • Verify that hardware health sensors on the device provide both status and values. If they provide only status, Orion does not have data to display in the chart.

If you verified the items, the data should be available in database, and displayed in the chart.

Customized Chart Settings

Revert the Chart Settings back to defaults using Web Console:

  1. Log in to the Orion Web Console as an administrator
  2. Click Settings > All Settings > Web Console Settings in the Product Specific Settings grouping.
  3. Scroll down to Chart Settings, and locate Maximum number of data series displayed on chart.
  4. Adjust this setting to a value greater than 10.

The default setting is 10. SolarWinds recommends adjusting this setting to no higher than 20.

  5. Make sure that the Chart Aspect Ratio is set to a value above .3.
  6. Save your settings.

To revert the Maximum number of data series back to defaults using SQL:

  1. Open the Database Manager, and run the following query to reset the chart settings to default:
  2. UPDATE Settings SET CurrentValue = 10 where SettingID like '%Web-MaximalNumberOfSeriesInChart%'

The charts should now display all data in the data series. See Chart Settings for more information.
