Orion Report Writer: Run-time error '481': Invalid picture

Updated April 19, 2017

The Orion Report Writer fails to launch properly with the following error:

Run-time error '481': Invalid Picture".

The whole application closes after clicking OK.

All SolarWinds Orion Core Platform versions

The error might be caused by insufficient disk space.

1. Clear some disk space on the Orion server.

2. Clearing out the Windows Temp folder might also resolve the issue

3. Try to launch Report Writer by right-clicking and running as administrator.

If that fails, navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\OrionReportWriter.exe > Right-click > Properties > Compatibility. Change the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" box to Windows Server 2003, or Windows 7 or older, then hit OK and try to launch it. You may want to try a few different ones here, also check the box for "Run this program as an administrator" on the same screen.

4. Open an elevated command prompt (run as admin), navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SolarWinds and run these commands:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SolarWinds>regsvr32 /u vsflex8u.ocx

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\SolarWinds>regsvr32 vsflex8u.ocx

This should reregister the graphic ocx components which may be the cause of the application crash.

Then, right-click Orion Report Writer and run as administrator.

Alternative Solution If none of the above work:

Go to the Orion install directory, your installation folder is C:\Program Files

- Select the following

- Create backup of files

- Remove files from folder

After this execute a Core Repair and it should add the files again verify if the issue is solved.
