This article provides steps on how to move (migrate) the Orion SQL database that is hosted on the Orion server itself to a separate SQL database server.

NPM all version

From the Orion server:

1. Install SQL Management Studio Express:

  • SQL Management Studio Express 2008

  • SQL Management Studio Express 2012

  • SQL Management Studio Express 2014

2. Open the SQL Management Studio Express from the Orion server using your Windows credentials.

3. From the Object explorer, expand Databases and locate the Solarwinds (Orion) database.

4. Right-click on the Orion database and click Tasks then Backup.

5. Create a backup of your Solarwinds database.

6. Place the backup in the Orion local directory or in your SQL server database storage device.

From the SQL server:

1. Open SQL Management Studio from your SQL server and connect using your SQL administrator account.

2. In the Object browser, right-click Database, and then click Restore Database.

3. Locate the Orion database backup file and then click OK.

Once the Orion database is successfully restored on the SQL server. Run the Configuration wizard on the Orion server and proceed with the steps below:

1. Log in on the Orion server.

2. Run the Configuration Wizard.

3. Select Database, provide the new Database instance, and the SolarWinds database credentials.

4. Proceed with the Configuration Wizard until its complete.

Note: Do not uninstall the SQL database instance on the Orion SolarWinds server since this causes issues with the Orion server.
