SQL Replication is a Microsoft technology for sharing a database across multiple SQL servers. Orion is fully compatible with many forms of SQL Replication but some cause problems.

Supported SQL Replication Technologies:

Unsupported SQL Replication Technologies:

  • All Orion Platform products
  • Microsoft SQL Server

All SQL Replication technologies may cause performance issues. Please consult your Database Administrator to verify Physical Requirements before enabling any Replication technology.

See Considerations for All Types of Replication (© 2018 Microsoft, available at, obtained on July 11, 2018).

Replication has several common uses:

High Availability

SQL Server has several HA options all of which require some form of Replication. The most common is SQL Always On which can provide Automatic Failover for SQL databases. This may require Merge Replication which is not supported because of the GUID requirement for Primary Keys in our Database.

See Configure Replication for Always On Availability Groups (SQL Server) (© 2018 Microsoft, available at, obtained on July 11, 2018).

If you set the database to FULL recovery mode which is necessary for Always On, you need to have a fine tuned backup policy. See SQL Server configuration best practices for NPM.

Disaster Recovery

Disaster Recovery for SQL Servers can be accomplished using Database Mirroring, Log Shipping, Transaction Log Replication, Snapshot Replication or by using SQL Backups.

See Description of disaster recovery options for Microsoft SQL Server (© 2018 Microsoft, available at obtained on July 11, 2018).

Distributed Storage Applications

SQL Database Mirroring can be used to make the same Database available across multiple Data Centers. This can be useful for Distributed Data Applications however this is not usually compatible with HA or DR.
