MS SQL Server Replication in SolarWinds Orion Database

Overview

SQL Replication is a Microsoft technology for sharing a database across multiple SQL servers. Orion is fully compatible with many forms of SQL Replication but some cause problems.

All SQL Replication technologies may cause performance issues. Please consult your Database Administrator to verify Physical Requirements before enabling any Replication technology.

Replication has several common uses:

 

High Availability

SQL Server has several HA options all of which require some form of Replication. The most common is SQL Always On which can provide Automatic Failover for SQL databases. This may require Merge Replication which is not supported because of the GUID requirement for Primary Keys in our Database.

If you set the database to FULL recovery mode which is necessary for Always On, you need to have a fine tuned backup policy. See SQL Server configuration best practices for NPM.

 

Disaster Recovery

Disaster Recovery for SQL Servers can be accomplished using Database Mirroring, Log Shipping, Transaction Log Replication, Snapshot Replication or by using SQL Backups.

Distributed Storage Applications

SQL Database Mirroring can be used to make the same Database available across multiple Data Centers. This can be useful for Distributed Data Applications however this is not usually compatible with HA or DR.
