MIB Browser finds MIB and value but SNMP monitor tests unknown

Updated November 9, 2017

Overview

A node is being monitored by SNMP. When you view the OID through the MIB browser, a value is shown. However, when the exact same OID is monitored using the SNMP component monitor, the test fails or the component is unknown.

Environment

  • NPM, all versions
  • SAM, all versions

Cause

The MIB browser makes assumptions for the MIB tree, but the SNMP component does not.

Resolution

Try the following options:

  • Put a .0 after the MIB in the component monitor
  • Run an SNMP walk to get the actual OID number

Put a .0 after the MIB in the component monitor

Put a .0 after the MIB in the component monitor. Notice that the OID that is specified in the component monitor will not be successful in the MIB Browser.

What works on the MIB browser:

Screenshot of the component that tests successfully (with the .0 added to the end of the OID):

If one was to use the MIB in the component in the MIB Browser:

Run an SNMP walk to get the actual OID number

If the .0 doesn't work, run an SNMP walk to get the actual OID number to use in the SNMP component monitor.
