WebinarUpcoming Webinar: Know What’s Changed – with NEW Server Configuration Monitor

Change management in IT is critical. But, even with a good change management process, changes are too often not correctly tracked, if at all. The configuration of your servers and applications is a key factor in their performance, availability, and security. Many incidents can be tracked back to an authorized (and sometimes unauthorized) configuration change, whether to a system file, configuration file, or Windows® Registry entry. Join SolarWinds VP of product management Brandon Shopp to discover how the new SolarWinds® Server Configuration Monitor is designed to help you.

How to Change Orion Agent Interface Priority

Updated April 18, 2018

Overview

This article details a resolution to an issue that occurs when you deploy a server with multiple Network Interface Cards (NICs) and the SolarWinds agent does not use the Interface IP Address as expected. Normally, Windows would allow changing this in the network control panel GUI. However, when you attempt to change the interface IP address, Windows is now forcing the use of the Powershell instead to set the priority.

Orion Agent Host sometimes has multiple NICs and need to have the Interfaces Prioritized.

Environment

  • All versions of Orion Core products

Steps

Here are some examples of Powershell commands.

Step 1. Learn

Get-NetIPInterface

Table of results:

ifIndex InterfaceAlias AddressFamily NlMtu(Bytes) InterfaceMetric DHCP ConnectionState PolicyStore
4 blue IPv4 1500 40 Disabled Disconnected ActiveStore
15 Lan IPv4 1400 50 Disabled Disconnected ActiveStore
10 Wi-Fi IPv4 1500 50 Enabled Disconnected ActiveStore
1 Loopback 1 IPv4 4294967295 50 Disabled Connected ActiveStore

Step 2. CHANGE

  • Set-NetIPInterface
  • InterfaceIndex = 10
  • InterfaceMetric = 20

Step 3. Confirm

Get-NetIPInterface

Table of results:

ifIndex InterfaceAlias AddressFamily NlMtu(Bytes) InterfaceMetric DHCP ConnectionState PolicyStore
4 blue IPv4 1500 40 Disabled Disconnected ActiveStore
15 Lan IPv4 1400 50 Disabled Disconnected ActiveStore
10 Wi-Fi IPv4 1500 20 Enabled Disconnected ActiveStore
1 Loopback 1 IPv4 4294967295 50 Disabled Connected ActiveStore
