HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable after reboot of Orion server

Overview

Reboot of Orion server results in following error when trying to access Orion Web Console:

A sample error is shown below after running the configuration Wizard.

 

HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable.

Environment

  • Orion Platform all versions
  • Windows Server 2008 (possibly any Windows Server)

Cause

The error is caused when the application pool in IIS is not started and shall be further investigated with IIS vendor (Microsoft).

Resolution

[added pre-step: recommended]

Pre-flight:

** From Orion Web server -

**Run "Orion Service Manager" then click "Shutdown all"

 

1) Open IIS ( Press Start, Type INETMGR and press Enter )

Expand IIS

  • Click Application pools > Right Click the "Solarwinds Orion Application Pool" and click remove

***Click on Basic Settings and Make Sure Has a Check Mark to Start Application Pool Immediately***

 

2) Expand Sites > Remove the Solarwinds NetPerfMon Website

** Stop All Orion Services using Orion Service Manager

 ** Please note that all settings are stored in the database so by deleting the website you will not lose any data**

 

3) Open Volume:\InetPub
Rename the Solarwinds folder to Solarwinds_OLD

 

3a) * Manual - check and repair Orion permissions.. "<vol>:\program files(x86)\solarwinds\orion\orion permission checker.exe"

 

4) Open the Orion Configuration wizard  (Press Start & Search Configuration Wizard)
Run the Website portion of the Configuration Wizard.. (optional you may also check the Services and Database boxes for full system check and configuration) 

This will create a new Website for you

Allow the configuration Wizard to complete & try browse to your website

 

4a) ( * Optional tasks: Manual checks suggested-

check and repair Orion permissions again,

Check and set wildcard to bindings in IIS.
