Failed upgrade of an additional polling engine using SolarWinds Orion Installer

Updated 15 January, 2019

During an upgrade to NPM 12.2 Hotfix 3, when you have downloaded the scalability engine installer from the Polling Engines page and run it on a remote server, the download gets interrupted.

  • Orion Platform 2017.3 Hotfix 4
  • NPM 12.2 Hotfix 3
  • Other Orion modules

An issue copying files from the main polling engine to the additional polling engine server is blocking the upgrade. This can be due to slowness between the main polling engine, additional polling engines, or additional web servers.

Orion Scalability Installer improvements (v1.3.x or later)

  • The download mechanism is improved by data chunking. The earlier installer didn't have this feature, it downloaded everything in one go.

  • When you run the Installer on an additional web server, additional polling engine, or on a high availability server, it pulls files from the main polling engine. You can see the progress of files being copied at:
Files start coming into downloads folder one by one, then move to the installers folder and are used in the installation.

To work around this issue, copy the Installers folder from the main polling engine to the remote high availability server, the additional polling engine, or additional web server:

  1. Copy the following folder on the main polling engine:
    • C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\Installers\

  2. Paste the folder to the remote server:
    • C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\Downloads\

  3. Restart the SolarWinds Orion Installer on the remote server. The installer checks the files in the Installations folder and downloads any missing installation files.

For example, if the folder you have copied from the main polling engine contained 42 files, but the installer expects 46 files at C:\ProgramData\Solarwinds\Downloads\ on the remote server, the installer only downloads the missing 4 files.
