Issue:

When the SolarWinds server is launched, the report writer, alert manager and trap manager applications have the error:

Exception Cannot open database "SolarWindsOrion" requested by the login. The login failed. Login failed for user 'ORION_Perfmon'

Cause:

The SolarWinds service was unable to open a new database connection when requested. This is due to the presence of expired certificates or invalid certificates on the Server for that user account.

Resolution:

  1. Click Start > Run > Type RegEdit to open the registry editor.
  2. Go to the registry path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSSQLServer\Client\SuperSocketNetLib.
  3. Check whether the value of the string REG_SG is empty. If it has the thumbprint value of the certificate, then it is an error. Change the value to 0.
  4. Check and remove the expired or invalid certificates from the server.
  5. Restart the SolarWinds service -
