Error when logging in to the SQL database server

Overview

When you log in to your SQL database server, the following error displays:

Error: 18456, Severity: 14, State: 2.
Login failed for user '<x>'.

Environment

  • All Microsoft® SQL Server® versions

Cause

  • The account login credentials do not exist
  • The account is the only Active Directory member in the SQL database server 

Resolution

Add the user account to the SQL Server database server.
