Custom UnDP polling fails when the device cannot process SNMP requests with more OIDs

Updated: October 3, 2018

Overview

When you have a custom UnDP poller assigned to a device that is not capable of processing SNMP requests with more OIDs, the polling fails with the following error:

System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Environment

  • SolarWinds products with Orion Platform 2017.3, such as DPA 11.0, NPM 12.2, NTA 4.2, SAM 6.6, or WPM 2.2

Cause

The device is not capable of processing SNMP requests with more than one OIDs.

Resolution

To resolve the issue:

  1. Open the SolarWinds.NPM.Pollers.dll.config in a text editor.
The default location of the file is C:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\NPM.
  2. Search for MaxSnmpGetOidsPerRequest, and set its value to 1.
  3. Save the changes.

Your Orion Platform now polls the OID on the device without issues.
