Configuration wizard 'Next' button does nothing for database connection

Updated: February 20, 2019

The database selection screen where the new database is specified is not responding after clicking Next.

This can happen when running the Configuration wizard after a database was migrated to a cluster.

There are two known causes for this issue. Search the ConfigurationWizard.log file for the following error message

Error message 1

< 2016-02-19 17:20:59,442 [1] ERROR SceneContainer - SceneContainer:bntNext_Click: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.SqlServer.ConnectionInfo, Version=, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=89845dcd8080cc91' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

Error message 2

ERROR SceneContainer:bntNext_Click: Microsoft.SqlServer.Management.Common.ExecutionFailureException:  An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. ---> System.Data.Sqlclient.SqlExceptions: The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'xp_instance_regread' , database 'mssqlsystemresource', schema 'sys'.

Orion Platform 2018.2 and earlier

The issue might be caused by one of the following options:

  • The user is missing the Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Shared Management Objects application.
  • The SQL user specified in the Configuration wizard does not have the 'sysadmin' server role applied in the SQL Server Management Studio. This is indicated by the following error:

The EXECUTE permission was denied on the object 'xp_instance_regread' , database 'mssqlsystemresource', schema 'sys'.

To resolve the issue when you don't have the Shared Management Objects application installed:

  1. Download Microsoft® SQL Server® 2012 Shared Management Objects.
  2. At the top of the page, click + to expand Install Instructions.
  3. Scroll down to Microsoft® SQL Server® 2012 Shared Management Objects downloads for both x86 and x64.
Download both packages and rename them while downloading.
  4. Restart the Configuration wizard.

Connection to the specified database should now be available and the Next button should work.

To resolve the issue when the SQL user does not have the sysadmin server role:

  1.  Add the 'sysadmin' server role to the specified user in SQL Management Studio. For details, see the following Microsoft article on creating, deleting, or modifying a role (© Microsoft 2019, available at, obtained on February 20, 2019)
