Clicking Database Details in the Orion Web Console generates an object reference error

Overview

When you log on to the Orion Web Console, click Settings > All Settings, and click Database Details, the console displays an error message similar to the message below:

Referrer: http://orion:8787/Orion/Admin/Details/DatabaseDetails.aspx
Message: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
ErrorSite: OrionWeb.DBMetadataDAL.get_DatabaseSize
ErrorType: System.NullReferenceException

Environment

  • Orion Platform 2018.4 

Cause 

Bug in how the error is handled

work around is to give database user permissions that cause the error. 

Resolution

  1. Connect to the SQL Server Management Studio as a user with SA rights.
  2. Grant the appropriate permission to the database user by running the following query:
    USE master
    GO
    GRANT VIEW ANY DEFINITION to SolarWindsOrionDatabaseUser
    GO
    

    where SolarWindsOrionDatabaseUser is the user that the Orion Platform uses to connect to the database.

  3. Save your changes.
