Activated license not displayed in the License Manager

Overview

When you have activated a license for a product with functions that are already licensed by another Orion Platform product, the license does not display in the License Manager. You cannot use the license for another server.

Environment

Orion Platform 2018.4 and later installed together with NAM, NOM, or ACM

Cause

You have enabled redundant activation of licenses in the Orion Web Console and then activated the license. 

The license for a product with functions included in an already licensed Orion Platform product was activated but you cannot see it in the License Manager. You cannot use the license for another server. 

This might be useful when you are using an evaluation version of the Orion Platform product. When the evaluation expires, the redundant license automatically takes over and appears in the License Manager. 

If you haven't activated the license redundantly on purpose, consider blocking the activation.

Resolution

Deactivate the license manually on a server with Internet access

  1. In the command line shell (cmd.exe) on the active main polling engine, navigate to Licensing folder. The default location is c:\Program Files (x86)\SolarWinds\Orion\Licensing
  2. Execute the migration.exe /deactivate:[your license key]
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

The license is deactivated and ready for reuse on another server.

Deactivate the license on an offline server using SDK

If you are not comfortable with SDK, contact SolarWinds support to deactivate the offline license for you.

Before you begin, prepare your LicenseKey, ProductName, and LicenseVersion.

  1. Using SDK, call the Orion.Licensing.Licenses.Deactivate verb with the switch ProvideReceipt=1.

Your license is deactivated and the deactivation receipt is stored in the database, in Licensing_DeactivationReceipts table. You might need to provide the receipt to sales or support when activating the license on another server.

Block redundant activation

By default, activating a license for a product with functions that are already a part of another Orion Platform product is blocked. If the setting was disabled, complete the following steps to block the activation again.

  1. Log in to the Orion Web Console using an administrator account.
  2. In your browser, add Orion/Admin/AdvancedConfiguration/Global.aspx into the address bar, right after your Orion Platform hostname:

    [hostname]/Orion/Admin/AdvancedConfiguration/Global.aspx

  3. Search for CheckAlreadyLicensedProducts and make sure that the box is selected.
  4. Click Save.

Activating a license for a product with functions that are already included in an already licensed Orion Platform product will not be possible anymore.
