This video shows you how to reduce index fragmentation in the SolarWinds® Orion database. Indexes are used to help Orion find data quickly when pulled from the database.

Index defragmentation should be performed on any heavily used database on a routine basis. By default, the SolarWinds Orion Database schedules a maintenance routine to run every 24 hours at 2:15am, but this setting can be configured through the Orion Web Console.

When database maintenance detects highly fragmented database indexes, it can significantly decrease your database performance. The steps in this video will demonstrate how to create a SQL Server Maintenance Plan to address this issue.

You will need access to SQL Server Management Studio to complete these steps. If it's not already installed, you can use this link to download the installer.

Open SQL Server Management Studio.

Connect to the Database Engine that holds the SolarWinds Orion Database.

Expand the Management folder from the Object Explorer.

Right-click on Maintenance Plans, and click on Maintenance Plan Wizard. Click Next.

Create a name for your plan.

Schedule the maintenance plan to occur once daily. It is important that it does not overlap with a backup or Orion nightly Database Maintenance. Click Next.

Include the following maintenance tasks: Reorganize Index, Rebuild Index, Update Statistics, Clean Up History, and Maintenance Cleanup Task. Click Next.

Click Next.

Select the SolarWinds Orion Database from the drop-down menu. Click Next.

We are leaving the default settings in place for the selected maintenance tasks in this plan.

Repeat this step for each of the tasks you want to assign.

Navigate to the path where your backups are held. Click Okay.

And you're finished!
