Automatically redirect HTTP to HTTPS for the Orion Web Console

Updated Feb 21, 2017

Overview

This article describes how to setup an automatic HTTP to HTTPS redirection for the Orion Web Console using the Microsoft provided URL Rewrite module for IIS.

This requires your Orion web site to be bound to the default HTTPS port (443). Using another HTTPS port requires reworking the redirection rule which falls outside the scope of this article.

Environment

Any product running Orion Platform 2017.1, such as

  • NPM 12.1
  • SAM 6.4

You can configure automatic redirection for previous versions, but you must setup the HTTPS website binding manually.

Resolution

This requires an extra HTTP binding for the Orion Web Console (steps 5-8).
When you run the Configuration Wizard, you must select the Skip website binding option to retain your redirection configuration.

  1. Log in to your SolarWinds Orion server as an administrator.
  2. Confirm that your Orion Web Console (SolarWinds NetPerfMon) has HTTPS binding configured to the default port (443).
    • For products running on Orion Platform 2017.1, you can configure this using the Configuration Wizard's Website Settings page.
    • For older products, use this KB to manually configure SSL binding.
  3. Download and install the  URL Rewrite module from Microsoft. (https://www.iis.net/downloads/microsoft/url-rewrite)
  4. Click Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  5. Select your Orion Web Console site (SolarWinds NetPerfMon), and then click Bindings in the Actions pane.
  6. Click Add... in the Site Bindings window.
  7. In the Type field, select http, confirm that the Port value is 80, and click OK.
  8. Click Close on the Site Bindings window.
  9. In the center pane, open SSL Settings in the IIS group.
  10. Confirm that Require SSL is not selected, and then click Apply in the Actions pane on the right.
  11. In the center pane, open URL Rewrite in the IIS group.
  12. Click Add Rules(s) in the Actions pane.
  13. Select Blank Rule within Inbound rules block, and enter the following parameters for the rule:
    Name: HTTP to HTTPS redirection

    Match URL:
    Requested URL: Matches the Pattern
    Using: Regular Expression
    Pattern: (.*)
    Ignore case checked

    Conditions:
    Add New Condition:
    Condition Input: {HTTPS}
Check if input string: Matches the Pattern
    Pattern: OFF
    Ignore case checked

    Action:
    Action type: Redirect
    Redirect URL: https://{HTTP_HOST}/{R:1}
    Append query string checked
    Redirect type: Found (302)
